Let’s talk about books! Here’s what I’ve read over the past few months:

First Comes Love by Emily Giffin

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this one. It was a light, easy read but a page turner at the same time. The story is told from the two very different perspectives of sisters who experienced a family tragedy. At first, I had a hard time relating to either them but they both grew on me. In the end, I liked the way it all worked out and the central themes of this book. I think Emily Giffin is always a safe bet.
 
All the Missing Girls by Miranda Megan

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This book blindsided me, in a good way. It’s told backwards, which I thought would really be a challenge for my OCD (I can’t ever watch a TV show episode or read a series out of order) but this was done so well. I flew through this book because I didn’t want to put it down. That’s always a sign of a good thriller, it’s one of my favorites I’ve read in a while.

Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll

So every thriller has girl in the title lately and I read this right after All the Missing Girls so I didn’t think I would have two I liked in a row but they were both good and so different. This book was super dark and twisty and touched on some really deep issues. I read a lot of reviews about how much people hated this book but I think it’s mostly because it’s really hard to relate to the main character, Ani, who is a complete sociopath. I felt the same way about her but still thought it was well written and interesting.

The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book is about the intertwined lives of a dysfunctional suburban neighborhood. It went from a solid 4 to a 3 for me about halfway through. I was really interested at first but it got to the point where I just wanted to finish it and see what happened. Also, I wasn’t really a fan of the ending, for most of the neighbors there was no real ending or it was unrealistic. Not terrible but not my favorite.

I listened to this on Audible and I though it was going to be kind of like Desperate Housewives. It was more like the SNL version of Desperate Housewives. I laughed out loud a few times, but for the most part it was just too much.

The Casual Vacany by J.K. Rowling

It pains me to say, I didn’t even finish this book. I really wanted to try it and like it because it’s J.K. Rowling but I just could not get into it no matter how hard I tried. I eventually just gave up. This makes me think she should stick to YA or fantasy….

  • I’ve heard good things about Luckiest Girl Alive and it’s on my list! And All the Missing Girls sounds really good too. I have no desire to pick up The Casual Vacancy. I’ve head too many people say it was disappointing and couldn’t even finish it.

    • It really wasn’t worth and it is NOT very often that I don’t finish a book. I liked All the Missing Girls better than Luckiest Girl Alive but both kept me interested!

  • I enjoyed American Housewife and despised Emily Giffin. This is why I love book talk…everyone has different opinions!

  • I have The Casual Vacancy on my bookshelf, but still haven’t read it yet- it seems to have pretty mixed/low reviews. I don’t think I’ve heard of Things We Wish We Knew, but the premise sounds really interesting!

  • The telling of the story backwards confused me so much with All The Missing Girls! I love a good thriller, and Luckiest Girl Alive is on my TBR- so happy to see a positive review! I’ve heard that Rowling’s “adult” books leave something to be desired, so I haven’t looked into it. Totally agree that Emily Giffin is a safe bet though!

    • It took me a while to get into the whole telling backwards thing too but in the end I really liked it. I just had to read it really quickly so I didn’t forget what was going on!

  • I have The Things We Wish Were True on my kindle. I liked your first girls but hated the second one.

  • I have 3 of these books on my to read list already. So many books, so little time……sigh.
